A Post About Derek

Derek coached all the neighborhood kids’ coach pitch teach this summer. It was super fun mostly made up of kids we know from the neighborhood with a couple of new kids we didn’t know. He did a great job. I only got this one picture from the season with our boys and Levi Watkins.
He still cares a great deal about the yard and keeps his grass in pristine condition. This is the boys riding around on the lawn mower with him one week in the summer after we had been out of town and the grass got super long so he borrowed the riding lawn mower from Jay Riley.
Derek recently got called to be the ward Elder’s Quorum president. He felt super overwhelmed by this calling at the start, but he has fantastic counselors and they are all doing a super job. One week I put Derek in charge of our home church lesson. It involved sword fighting and reenacting some of the war chapters of the book of Mormon.
One of the highlights of the year was building this custom shed onto the back of the garage. Derek feels like this has changed his life and he wishes he would have done it years ago. Derek bought himself a smoker for Christmas and lets each kid (and me) rotate picking which meat we want him to smoke for Sunday dinner. This is a pic of Carter helping him get a rub on the ribs.
Now, Derek is ending the year and starting the next by couching the boys basketball team with Jared Davis as assistant coach. He is a great basketball coach that the boys learn a lot from.
