Lake Powell Trip

This year we got invited the join Steph and Jon and Derek’s cousins, Jennifer and Julie and their families, on their Lake Powell house boat trip over Memorial Day weekend.  We pitched in to pay for 2 house boats which meant Derek and I actually got a bed on the house boat—we won’t talk about how it was really more like a teeny mattress in the middle of the hallway everyone used to pass through the house boat.  I volunteered to bring all the lunch food for the whole group for all the days.

My Costco cart was stuffed to the rim and we had to borrow a cooler from the Thorsteds just to pack all the food down.  We also did one breakfast (we made bagel breakfast sandwiches).

Derek and I rode down with Steph and Chase on Thursday night.  The kids slept on top of the house boat every night with Chase and had a blast.
One night it was super windy so they all 3 and Chase crammed into the bed that could be made on the table of the house boat.  The kids all slept pretty good on top the house boat probably because Chase threatened them that he would throw them in the drink if they woke him up unnecessarily.

I snapped this picture of Jon and the kids all sitting around the breakfast table.
He would give all the kids quiz questions during meals.  It was actually pretty chilly down at Lake Powell that weekend.  Never got much hotter than 70 degrees and the water was chilly.  But, that didn’t stop the kids from tubing and paddling around.
We docked the 2 house boats in our own little private cove lose to the marina (but you couldn’t tell).  So the kids paddled around endlessly without us worrying a bigger boat would run them over.    We brought down our inflatable kayak which was fun.
They also rode the house boat slides down into the warmer when they felt brave enough to conquer the chilly water.  Afterwards, the kids would lay out on top of the house boat to get warmed up.
Sunday, we all got dressed up and rode the boats to shore to catch a church session.  Then, we came back and took a long boat ride out to Rainbow Bridge.
We had a little devotional at the arch and then stopped by Dangling Rope Marina for some soft serve ice cream (or nachos if you are Camden) and then headed back to the house boat arriving just before dark.
Monday, we visited the little museum at the dam.  Camden found a play boat set up and stayed there the majority of the time commanding all in his boat to tie up the buoys and prepare for docking.
Then, we drove home with Chase.  It was a great trip.  The kids enjoyed paddling around with all their kid cousins, Derek enjoyed staying up late every night playing games with his cousins, and I survived the cold water and boat rocking that I am so sensitive to (barely and with a lot of Meclizine which made me pretty sleepy and thus I called it an early night every night).  There is talk of making it a yearly event…maybe next year I get those ear patches.
