Our ward has never done the traditional Father/Son campout
that a lot of wards do which Derek has always been a little sad about. So one Sunday he finds himself, the current
ward mission leader, sitting in ward counsel and they are trying to come up
with some sort of activity they can plan that would involve our whole
neighborhood and not just the active members of the ward. Derek, and he may regret speaking up now,
suggested a Father/Son campout and then was promptly put in charge of organizing
and planning said Father/Son campout.
From the sounds of it, it was quite the success. All the men sat around talking while the kids
ran around mostly unsupervised in the dark.
Derek appreciated the fact that Camden and Carter had light up shoes on
because he could generally find where they were with minimal effort.
Liv and I planned a fun filled girls night while they were
out. First we went to get pedicures then
we had planned to get sushi and snuggle up in my bed to watch “Anne with and E”
on Netflix. Our plans got slightly
altered when we found out Liv got selected for a call back audition for the
part of Young Nala in the Lion King play she had tried out for at Center Stage
a couple days before. We had brought
Annie with us to the audition to play the piano. Liv chose to sing How Far I’ll Go from Moana
and Castle on a Cloud and she sang both quite well if I do say so myself. So in between pedicures and sushi we show up
for her call back audition. They had
called back 4 girls for the part of young Nala and only planned to keep one of
them. Also, all the other girls were
about 9 years old with a lot more acting and auditioning experience than
Liv. After the audition, over sushi I
told Liv that she had done super great, but that if she didn’t end up getting
the part not to be too upset because all the other girls were a little older
with more experience.
They ended up
casting Liv in the Ensemble, and I was amazed at how well she accepted the role
without complaint and even seemed quite excited. It wasn’t until almost 6 weeks later that she
confessed to me that she really did want to be Young Nala. I told her that the most important thing was
to have fun and that one day it would be her turn to get the part. This was the first play she auditioned for
and she was younger than the other girls but when she was older with more
experience it would be her turn to get the part she really wanted. Then, to our surprise the very next week they
asked Liv if she would again audition for the part of Young Nala. I guess they had only single casted the Young
Nala part, but had double casted the Young Simba part and had decided they
wanted to double cast the Young Nala part as well. She came home from practice so excited and I
was just nervous that this auditioning again would end up in heartbreak. But low and behold she came back from the
next practice beaming with a script in hand and announced that she got the
part!!! She was so excited and told me
in great detail all the blocking she had learned that day for the part and then
went down to her room much past bedtime reading her lines over and over
memorizing them (and from the sounds of it quite dramatically enacting them as
well). I didn’t have the heart to rain
on her parade and tell her to go to bed.
Anyways, she is so so so so excited and loves practice and getting to be
Young Nala and can’t wait to perform.
